The Great Pyramids of Egypt are the only ancient world wonders that have survived. These Pyramids are thousands of years older. Except for parts of the Mausoleum and of the temple of Artemis, the great Pyramids of Egypt are the only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing. They were constructed between 2650 and 2500 BC. These Pyramids can be found in the Egyptian city of Giza.
The Pyramids of Giza are not only impressive due to their size and scale but also because of the sophisticated engineering and architectural prowess demonstrated by the ancient Egyptians. Despite their age, the pyramids continue to be a testament to the ingenuity and advanced knowledge of ancient civilizations. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attract millions of visitors from around the world each year.
What is the purpose of Pyramid construction?
The Great Pyramids is ancient man-made structure. According to Egyptian mythology, these Pyramids were built as a tomb for the mummies of ancient Egypt's king and queen. These are the only civilians who believe there is life after death. As a result, they constructed a massive monument to hold bodies. Mummies, they believe, occupy space for another life.
Pyramids often functioned as important centers for religious and ceremonial activities. Priests and other religious figures would conduct rituals and ceremonies within or around these monumental structures. Some pyramids were built to commemorate significant events or victories in the civilization's history. They served as enduring memorials and reminders of the past.
A great deal of research is being done on the structures. Some research discovered that certain types of composites aid in the generation of electricity, proving that pyramids served as ancient Egypt's power plants.
Inside of the Pyramid
The Great Pyramid holds many secrets inside. The Pyramid's interior features a large ceremonial passage that is about 45 meters long and 9 meters tall. The King's Chamber, which is made of granite, is located a few meters high. The king Pharaoh was buried inside the chamber in a Sarcophagus carved in stone, but his mummified body was stolen many centuries ago by looters.
The Queen's chamber is located in the center, a few meters down from the king's chamber, and below is the underground chamber, which is usually closed to the public. The actual reason for shutting the chamber is unknown, although according to some researchers, below ground level the chamber was incomplete, and the wall was rough in comparison to the rest of the pyramid and a three-meter-deep shaft inside the chamber. The tunnel ways for all three chambers are fabulous; the chambers and the three axis corridors are perfectly aligned. The Great Pyramid architects and builders were worked with precession.
Construction and History
In the 26th century BC, when Egyptian civilization was at its peak, three kings, Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson Menkure, ordered the construction of three massive Pyramids that would serve as their tombs. The first of these, the Great Pyramid, is the largest ever built. It stands with the other two pyramids and the Great Sphinx in a cluster near the town of Giza.
King Khufu's pyramid rests on a base that covers 13acres (5.3 hectares), and each side of the base is about 756 feet (230 meters) long. The top of the Great Pyramid, which previously reached a height of 481 feet (147 meters), has been removed.
The construction of the pyramids was mandated by the Egyptian pharaohs as a means of protecting their dead from grave robbers. They chose a location on the west bank of the Nile River because they believed that the home of the dead was toward the setting sun. The burial chambers were placed under the exact centers of the pyramids. Later, large stones were used to cover off passageways. The Pyramids, however, did not serve their purpose of protecting the ancient tombs, and over the centuries, looters broke into most of them and stole the jewels and other treasures that had been buried in them.
The Greek historian Herodotus, who wrote some 2,400 years ago, estimated that 100,000 men labored for 20 years to complete the Great Pyramid. 2.3 million stone blocks are estimated to have been utilized in the construction of the pyramid. Nobody will ever know what technology they have used to build the pyramids, although some of the engineers have suggested that water power has been used during construction. Limestone was used to cover the exterior of the Pyramid once it had been built, making it clearly visible from all sides and from far distances. Other scholars who have studied the relationship between the position of the Pyramids and the apparent motion of the sun and other stars suggest that the Pyramids design may have been influenced by a religion based on sun worship.
